Let's Get Some Posts Going!

What good is the internet if not used as a means to steal other people's ideas? I say no good at all! That being the case, I'm going to steal an idea from Shakespeare's Sister and start a series of posts that are merely questions and let my lovely readers discuss it on their own.

The first one is: What is the funniest movie of all time? It'd be best if you explained why you think your movie is the funniest of all time and not simply post the name.

"I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in / I found my mind in a brown paper bag within / I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high / I tore my mind on a jagged sky"

Extra points for the first person to guess my pick. To help a bit, the song lyrics are a hint.

Yup, and yup, though I think as I think you know now, that they full title is "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)". But never let it be said that I nitpick, at least when Star Wars or Trek aren't involved.

Funniet movie of all time... that's tough. I'm going to go with Monty Python's Life of Brian. It's funniest because it contains every conceivable type of humor. There is some exceedingly low-brow stuff, like laughing at Pilate's speech impediment. There's juvenile humor about dirty-sounding Roman names. Then there's some real high-brow stuff, like the Centurion-as-Latin-teacher scene, and some very perceptive cultural satire aimed at organized religion. And, of course, the out-and-out absurdity of an alien spaceship showing up in a swords-and-sandals picture.

And it all works. Plus it actually has a compelling story, just for kicks.

Never misconstrue the BEST movie of all time with the FUNNIEST movie of all time. Big Lebowski, clearly, is an example of some of America's finest cinematography, writing, and acting (or at the very least interpretation of the script) but we cannot forget Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail, Real Genius, and several Mel Brooks films. Think you may need to narrow, bro. Think genre; romantic commedy, smart commedy, dark commedy, Woody Allen...Army of Darkness? Man, beautiful! Can't forget THAT one!

Joy, I was definitely thinking "funniest" rather than "best". If Ben had asked "best", the answer would have been obvious: Dr. Strangelove. There's nothing else even close.

Obviously, any choice is going to be completely subjective, so when I say that The Big Lebowski is the funniest film of all time I merely mean that I can watch that film an unlimited number of times and still laugh. Those other movies are great, they're just not my favorite.

And as to narrowing, well, if you feel you need to compartmentalize you are welcome to list several favorites I guess, but I'm comfortable saying that The Big Lebowski is the best comedy ever. For-Ev-Er!
