Go Bears!

As noted in a previous post, Tony Dungy doesn't seem to like gays much. On top of that, an intrepid internetician found out that Peyton Manning gave Bush and another Republican money in the last election. If the person's to be believed, the only Bears that are politically active are liberals. As much as I like Manning's commercials, this is just another reason I'm hoping Chicago wins on Sunday.

You're joking, right? I mean, I'm as partisan as the next guy, but rooting against a team because the quarterback is a Republican? That's crazy.

I will be rooting for the Colts, because I have a friend who is a Colts fan. I have another friend who, last year, made me appreciate just how important this sort of loyalty can be. I wonder what happened to that guy.

As discussed several times over the last couple weeks, I decided to root for the Bears because I wanted the team that beat the Seahawks to win. It's not like that engenders a strong love for the Bears, but it would lessen the sting of losing a bit if we lost to the champs. Had the Hawks lost to the Cowboys, and then the Cowboys lost to the Bears, I really wouldn't have any interest in the game.

Given my slight inclination towards the Bears, the fact that Tony Dungy supports opponents of gay rights and Peyton Manning supports Bush adds a marginal marginal to my already lukewarm Bears support.

Plus, I hate Cinderella stories and I'm not crazy about the thought of the flood of "Peyton Manning finally did it" stories if the Colts win.

Still, as you said, a friend's home team is playing and he cares about the outcome. No matter who wins I'm not going to be either thrilled or bummed out, but I'll certainly be happy for Neil if he gets to celebrate a victory.

And as far as impugning my loyalty, I'd just like to point out that I was among the first, if not *the* first to congratulate Neil on his team's victory over the Pats.

And seriously, no comment on the awesomeness of the word internetician? I was quite proud of that'n.

The hell?! Why would you vote for the team that beat the Seahawks?! That's an ass-backward way to think about things. Be loyal to the team that lets us down just in time for the Sonics to let us down (wait...are the Sonics even IN Seattle anymore?). THEN you should be loyal to the team that lets us down just in time for the Mariners to let us down. WA, man!

All told, I'm not invested in any damn team this year. Because you wanted MY opinion on this whole mess.

See, it's my opinion that it's better if your team loses to the best in the league than if they lose to somebody that then gets beat by some other team. If the Hawks lose to the champs, well, then who can blame them really? I know, it's not much consolation to losing in the first place, but it's something, particularly when I'm trying to decide who to root for in a game which contains no teams that I care about.

Given the reasons stated here and in my other posts, I'm leaning towards the Bears but I'll hardly be broken up if the Colts win. Frankly, I plan on not giving much of my attention to the game and much more attention to other game-day diversions.

Ben's right. It's been my custom for years that if my team loses, I root for the team that beat 'em, cause losing to the eventual champion is no great shame. There are exceptions. I never root for the New Jersey Devils, the Dallas Cowboys, or any team from New York City (nominally or actually).

Both valid points I hadn't considered! Too bad Colts won. Effing Manning...
