Duke freshmen get free iPods as learning tools. I'm sure they get a mega discount for buy so many, but still, can anyone think of legitimate educational uses for these other than a couple pre-loaded audio files from the student handbook that no one will listen to?

I highly doubt it's for educational purposes, more for "please come to Duke" purposes. Nothing inspires more athletes to put on the Blue Devil uniforms like free swag, beer and guaranteed grades in classes. I'm sure free women would also inspire, but I don't think universities have stepped into the roles of pimps quite yet, give it a few years.
I suppose you could load it with daily planner software, on top of a version of the student handbook and other crap. But you could do this with a Palm Pilot for at least $100 less. An iPod can also transport very large files, but I assume Duke is fully networked already.
So, basically, I don't have a clue why they're spending half a million dollars on this.
